'Secret Life Of Pets' Sequel Coming in 2018

It looks like Illumination have their second franchise. In news that will not surprise anyone who heard about their latest release's gigantic box-office haul, The Secret Life Of Pets is officially getting a sequel.

The first film scored the biggest US opening for any original film (animated or not)  back in July, and has since gone on to gross $400 million internationally. All this while the film has yet to even open in a number of key territories, with China getting the film this week.

The sequel has been greenlit for release on July 13th 2018 in the United States.  The second film will see Chris Renaud and Brian Lynch return to direct and pen the screenplay, respectively,  while Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy will serve as producers. No further details have been announced at this time.

Secret Life Of Pets was Illumination Entertainment's first release outside the Despicable Me franchise and has successfully proven that there is more to this studio than the Minions. In the space of just a few years, they have gone on to become a force to be reckoned with,  going toe-to-toe with the industry's heavyweights. Next up from the studio is another original with the Garth Jennings written and directed  Sing (arriving this Christmas), and the inevitable Despicable Me 3 due next summer.
