'Your Name' Has A Strong US Opening Weekend

Makoto Shinkai's latest feature Your Name has already become the biggest grossing anime film at the worldwide box-office- some time before even making it to the United States. Hopes have been high that Funimation's limited cinema release would continue to build even further on this success. Following a  limited awards-qualifying run late last year, the film has now opened in US cinemas - how did it do?

The news is pretty good. The opening day was particularly strong, raking in north of $600,000 from just under 300 locations. Although it wasn't quite able to keep up the momentum it finished up the opening weekend with a decent $1.6 million- enough to put it at number 13 in the box-office chart overall.

Anime is a niche product in the US, and the release is relatively limited so it was never likely to trouble even the low end of box-office top ten. Despite glowing reviews and positive buzz, it also lacks the name recognition of a brand like Dragon Ball Z (that saw the last movie rake in $4 million in the same time frame). Given these factors, Funimation won't be disappointed with these numbers.

Your Name's theatrical run will continue over the coming weeks, so there's plenty of time for this to grow, Visit the website to find your nearest screening and. check out our review of the film here
