First Trailer Arrives For Cartoon Saloon's 'The Breadwinner'

Ireland's Cartoon Saloon has released two features so far- The Secret Of Kells and Song Of The Sea- and won Oscar nominations for both. The latter went on to pick up 11 awards (including Best Film at the Irish Academy Awards) and 21 nominations. But could their third feature go on to surpass even that?

The Breadwinner has some major star-power behind it, with Angelina Jolie on board as producer. Secret Of Kells co-director Nora Twomey s making her solo feature debut with this adaptation of the acclaimed book by Deborah Ellis.

Set in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, a young girl must disguise herself as a boy to support her family when her father is imprisoned. It looks a world away from the Celtic fantasy that made the studio's name, but this first trailer shows that the visuals will be as beautiful as ever. Although considerably less green.

Intriguingly, there's also glimpses of a change in animation style,  in what appears to be a story told within the story (shades of The Prophet here). The combination of these two styles only makes this all the more beautiful. We just can't wait.

The Breadwinner is produced by Cartoon Saloon in association with Aircraft Pictures, GKIDS Films and Melusine Productions. There's no exact release date just yet, but it will be released in the US by GKIDS in "Fall 2017" and in the UK and Ireland (probably in 2018) by Studio Canal.
