Golden Globes Name Best Animated Feature Nominations.

The Oscars remain the biggest night in the awards season calendar- and that's not going to change anytime soon. The Golden Globes, on the other hand, have become perhaps the second highest-profile film awards- in the US at least. If nothing else, they are seen as a useful indicator of what films are likely to gain recognition come Oscar time- although the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and The Academy do not always see eye-to-eye. The Globes followed their glitzier rivals in adding a category for best animated feature- and naturally, that's what we're here to talk about today.

There's few surprises, with Big Hero 6, The Lego Movie, Boxtrolls and How To Train Your Dragon 2 getting their expected places. The final place goes to The Book Of Life, which is perhaps the only slightly unexpected choice. Cartoon Saloon's Song Of the Sea and Studio Ghibli's The Tale of The Princess Kaguya are seen as serious contenders in most places, but at the Globes they've been completely shut out. From our point of view, it's certainly a shame not to see 2D animation represented in the group at all.

With that said, Jorge Gutierrez's movie (despite its distinctive Latino feel) is probably the most commercial of the three- so perhaps it's not such a big surprise after all.  The 72nd annual Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 11th 2015.
