Golden Globes Reveal Best Animated Motion Picture Nominees

As the awards season train keeps on moving, the next stop is the Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual awards ceremony may be several notches below The Oscars is terms of prestige, but they offer the animated features released each year another shot at glory. The category that we're most interested in, is -of course-  Best Motion Picture- Animated.

This year the HFPA decided to nominate Disney's Zootopia and Moana, LAIKA's Kubo and The Two Strings, Illumination's Sing and My Life As A Zucchini (distributed in the US by GKIDS). It's the last of the five films that is the biggest surprise, beating out not only fellow independent animation like Your Name and The Red Turtle but also big cheeses like Finding Dory and Secret Life Of Pets- which are after all two of the biggest hits of the year.

The Claude Barras directed stop-motion (known elsewhere as My Life As A Courgette) is having a pretty good week, having recently won Best Animated Feature at the European Film Awards. Zootopia and Kubo have both already got a string of awards to their name (the Disney feature having recently won at the Critics Choice Awards) so the category this year is looking pretty competitive all over.

The other surprising inclusion is Illumination Entertainment and Garth Jennings' upcoming Sing. We only say that it's surprising because it has yet to open so we don't yet know how it will be received by general audiences or critics- although based on the trailers this has crowd-pleaser written all over it.

Animation is also well represented in the Best Original Song category, where Sing is joined by Moana (of course) and Trolls- the only nomination received by Dreamworks at this year's event.

This year's ceremony will take place on January 8th,  2017. See the full list of nominees here.
