'Your Name' Becomes The Top-Grossing Anime Worldwide.

Makoto Shinkai's Your Name is not done breaking records just yet. It recently topped the box-office in South Korea and became China's top-grossing 2D animation of all time. These successes have helped the film reach yet another amazing benchmark. As of this week, it surpassed Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away to become the top grossing anime worldwide.

Your Name has earned a total of $281 million to date, compared to Spirited Away's lifetime gross of $274 million. This makes it the highest grossing anime at the worldwide box-office, mainly on the strength of its success in Asia.  And it's a long way from finished yet- bear in mind that it has yet to even open in more than 92 territories, including the United States (awards qualifying run notwithstanding).

Spirited Away is still currently the all-time champion in its native Japan, however. Your Name has earned more than 23 billion Yen domestically in Japan, but is still some way off Spirited Away's 30 billion. Shinkai's film is still playing in Japan, despite having opened back in August. It's hard to say whether it will topple Miyazaki's towering classic eventually, but it's looking more and more likely as time goes on. Of its total gross, $207 million out of the $281 million total was made in Japan alone.

Your Name is still playing in select cinemas in the UK via Anime Limited and will be released in North America by Funimation sometime during early 2017 (to be confirmed).
