Amazon Developing Adult Animated Series Pilot 'Amberville'

Amazon has invested heavily in animation for kids and families and found some considerable acclaim with shows such as Tumble Leaf proving commercial and critical successes. They have also dipped their toes occasionally into adult animation- most recently with Titmouse's pilot for The New VIPs- although they have not yet found their answer to rival Netflix's Bojack Horseman.

Could they have found it with a new project from the co-director of Sausage Party, Conrad Vernon? Vernon is teaming up with screenwriter and author Chris McCoy to create new a new show called Amberville. The adult audience CG show is set in the criminal underworld of a city populated by living stuffed animals, and follows a reformed ex-criminal  Teddy Bear.

Based on the book series Mollisan Town (originally published in Swedish) by Tim Davys, it will be produced by Amazon Studios with Annapurna Pictures. Vernon and Annapurna will be reteaming for their second adult animated project, after the box-office success of Sausage Party.

Amazon operates differently from other streaming services by ordering a raft of pilots every year- in a similar way to traditional broadcast networks. The chances of a pilot getting a series order depend on how well it is received- based on a mix of numbers and viewer surveys. So when this hits, if you want to see more... it's in your hands.

No release date has been announced as of the time of writing.
