Netflix and Viz Media Announce New Original Animated Series 'Seis Manos'

Viz Media, the American anime and manga distribution company (not to be confused with the British adult comic of the same name) have announced their first foray into original content. The company that brought such titles as Naruto, Sailor Moon and Bleach to the States, will be teaming up with Netflix and Powerhouse Animation to launch the series Seis Manos.

Texas-based studio Powerhouse are best known for their work on Netflix's Castlevania series. Like Castlevania, Seis Manos is being pitched as an 'anime', but considering the entire creative team seems to be western, that is debatable at the very least.

It does, however, seem to be at least partly inspired by the popularity of anime among Mexican and wider South American audiences. Set in Mexico in the 1970's, it follows a trio of martial-arts experts who join forces with a DEA agent and a Mexican Federale to get revenge for the murder of their mentor. The series is co-created by Powerhouse's CEO Brad Graeber and writer Alvaro Rodriguez- who worked on Machete and From Dusk Til Dawn The Series. Also on board as a writer is Dan Dominguez, with Willis Bulliner signing on as series director.

"With over 30 years of experience bringing the best manga and anime to North America, Seis Manos will be VIZ Media’s first original animated property. We’re thrilled to bring Seis Manos to life with our partners at Netflix and Powerhouse Animation," says Brad Woods, Viz's chief marketing officer. "This show combines the absolute best in action and storytelling."

Seis Manos will debut on Netflix everywhere in 2019.
