GKIDS Announce 'Mirai', 'Perfect Blue' Theatrical Releases

US distributor GKIDS Films continue to bring the best in animation from around the world to American audiences. This week they have announced two new upcoming releases to add to their crowded slate.

First up is a re-release of Perfect Blue, the first film from the late, great Satoshi Kon. The psycho-thriller will be screening in a brand new digital transfer on September 6  (subtitled) and September 10 (dubbed) in association with Fathom Events. The screenings are said to be in celebration of the film's 20th anniversary, although it was actually released in 2017 (and received an anniversary release in the UK last Halloween). Whatever the reason, it's a great (and rare) chance to catch the movie- which is still unavailable on Blu-Ray or DVD in the US.

"Satoshi Kon was an incredibly visionary and remarkable filmmaking talent," said GKIDS President Dave Jesteadt. "His shocking debut feature remains incredibly relevant, with its bold view of how technology and media can mold and distort our own perceptions of ourselves, and we are pleased to offer a new opportunity for audiences to discover his work."

Tickets are available now.

Secondly, GKIDS have confirmed the release date for their upcoming release of Mirai from director Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time). The family sci-fi/fantasy about a spoiled four year old named Kun who is jealous of his new baby sister Mirai. But when magical circumstances allow him to meet an older teenaged version of his sister from the future,  they go on a journey "through time and space, uncovering their family's incredible story." But why did his sister come from the future?

Following a successful debut, premiering in Cannes Festival's prestigious Director's Fortnight (the first anime to do so), the film will come to the US on November 30, 2018. It will hit screens in both subtitled and dubbed versions.

Other release details will be revealed later. In the meantime, a website has launched where you can register for updates.
