'The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part' Second Trailer Arrives

Early next year, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will finally arrive. By the time it opens, it will be nearly five years after the original (directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller) surpassed all expectations. Lord and Miller are on board as producers this time, making way for Mike Mitchell (Trolls) and Trisha Gum to direct. The film is written by Lord and Miller alongside Matt Fogel,  Michelle Morgan, Dominic Russo and BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg.

We got our first taste of the sequel in the debut teaser, which dropped back in the summer. Now, with the release date just a few months away, the second trailer has made its way online.

The new trailer definitely shows us much more than the first one. We spend much more time in the Mad Max style world that Brickburg has become five years after the end of the first movie ("when everything was awesome"). We see the invasion of the Duplo aliens, and see how Lucy (aka Wyldstyle) winds up getting kidnapped- kickstarting the rescue mission that will presumably be the major part of the movie.

We also see more of the adventure in space itself, and meet new characters Queen Watevra, Wa-Nabi and Sweet Mayhem as well as Rex Dangervest. The latter is voiced by Chris Pratt (who also voices lead role Emmett) in a role that looks set to be full of meta jokes about Pratt's roles in Guardians Of The Galaxy, Jurassic World and more.

We would hope that most of what we see here is from the first and second acts- and that there are many secrets still to come. Although this sequel, by definition, can't hope to recreate the sense of surprise that the first film benefited from, with Lord and Miller still involved we wouldn't bet against it.

We just hope it's more of a case of 22 Jump Street and less of a Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2.

Lego Movie 2: The Second Part arrives in cinemas on February 8, 2019.
