Pixar's 'Onward' Teaser Appears As If By Magic

Thanks to the back-to-back releases of sequels Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4, we haven't seen an original Pixar film since 2017's Coco. And with Cars 3 and Finding Dory also being among their recent films, we have to go all the way back to 2015 to see their last non-sequel before that. Fortunately, the studio is apparently working on a number of original films, so after this year we should be seeing fewer sequels- for a while at least.

The only film we know about right now is Onward, the suburban fantasy from Dan Scanlon. Earlier this week, we got our first look at stills from the film (see below), and this has now been joined by the first teaser trailer.

The debut teaser essentially introduces us to to the film's (killer) setting. It's a fantasy world, of elves, trolls, goblins and dragons- but one that has evolved into something that looks very much like the modern world. We're introduced to a suburban American neighbourhood, populated by elves, centaurs and gnomes. Feral unicorns forage through rubbish bins. And dragons are domesticated pets.

We meet our central characters- a pair of elf brothers, voiced by Spider-Man's Tom Holland and Chris 'Star-Lord' Pratt. And from such a piece of casting, it seems like their characters are exactly what you would expect from those actors. Holland's character is a slightly nerdy, cautious soul, and Pratt's is a boisterous, act-first-ask-questions-later type.

Pixar are amongst the industries' best when it comes to making teaser trailers. This first look keeps so much of the plot under wraps but does a good job on selling what makes the film watching. We'll see much more in future trailers, no doubt, but we don't really need to. This teaser should be enough to get you excited all by itself.

Onward is directed by Dan Scanlon and will arrive in cinemas in March 2020. It also features the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer. Check out the trailer, below.
