Web Animation Watch: Christmas Edition 2019

Christmas time is here again. Which can only mean that it's time for our annual festive edition of Web Animation Watch.  In this year's bumper-sized stocking stuffer, we've got music aplenty and great new animation from Blue Zoo, Simon's Cat, Weebl and more.

Web Animation Watch will return in 2020. If you've created something that you think we should see, drop us a line.

Let's Not Go Away | Scouting For Girls

UK based Blue Zoo animation studios produced this music video for the new single from British trio Scouting For Girls.  Let's Not Go Away is an interesting twist on a Christmas song, featuring a man's plea not to have to spend Christmas with his girlfriend's family. The inspired video casts a gingerbread man in the lead. Beautifully animated, fabulously festive and brilliantly funny stuff- perfect for Christmas!

Christmas Crow | Simon's Cat

This year's Christmas edition of the adventures of our favourite fictional feline sees Simon's Cat trying to get into the festive spirit. Unfortunately, his plans are thrown into disarray by the antics of a mischievous crow. You can also watch a kitty Christmas compilation of festive episodes, here.

Mr Weebl's Vague Days Of Christmas

In year's past, Mr Weebl has managed to somehow release 24 (mainly) animated videos,  one each day in December as part of an animated advent calendar. This year, rather than kill himself to repeat this superhuman feat, he's instead releasing the "Vague Days of Christmas". This more manageable (but still ambitious) plan will feature "possibly 12 cartoons... maybe every other day". Keep an eye on his channel for more festive fun.

A Very Short Animated Pentatonix Christmas Film

Acapella phenomenon Pentatonix star in their very own stop-motion Christmas short. Director Melissa Goodwin Shepherd does a great job of making a modern spin on beloved holiday specials.

Barbour Christmas Advert 2019

In the UK, Christmas adverts are a big deal. Every big brand pulls out all the stops to be the commercial that everyone is talking about. Strangely though, this one has somewhat slipped through the cracks- despite being based on the work of the beloved Raymond Briggs.  Brigg's unique version of Father Christmas (Santa Claus) returns to star in this ad for clothing brand Barbour's 125th anniversary.

Reindeer Ready

Another UK TV Christmas advert, this time for McDonald's. Its link to the product it's selling is tenuous, to say the least, but taken as an animated short, it's pretty fantastic and employs a wonderful animation style.

Queen - Thank God It's Christmas (Official Animated Video)

This beautifully atmospheric animated video was made to accompany this largely forgotten Christmas tune from rock gods Queen. The video's gentle journey through a Christmas cityscape feels like the perfect accompaniment to this sweeping anthemic track.
