Cancel The Dogpocalypse: The Final SCOOB! Trailer Has Arrived

Producing a fresh take on a beloved property from the past is never an easy prospect.  Change too much and you risk a backlash from original fans, but stay too close to the source and you risk alienating the new audience by making something that feels outdated.

The first trailer for SCOOB!, Warner Animation Group's new iteration of the Scooby-Doo franchise met with a very mixed reception. It impressed with its updated designs of the characters and charmed with it surprisingly sweet tone but concerned others with its overly-articulate Scooby and apparent rewriting of the character's history.

The second (and final) trailer is not likely to convince anyone in the latter camp, but may win over anyone who is willing to embrace a fresh take on the 50-year-old franchise. SCOOB will act as an origin story featuring the first meeting of the gang but- that's only part of the story.

"This isn't about some guy in a rubber mask", says Fred making it clear that they aren't simply retreading the same old formula. No, there's a much bigger plot at play this time, which seems to involve UFOs, superheroes, robots and thrilling chases. Scooby and Shaggy are beamed aboard a spaceship, leaving Fred, Daphne and Velma to investigate their disappearance.

SCOOB is the first part of a proposed interconnected Hanna-Barbera universe, giving WAG a much bigger toybox to play with. The trailer features appearances from Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, and the movie's big bad seems to be Dick Dastardly (although we don't see him in his iconic costume).

It's a little odd to see so much of the trailer focused on Falcon, as although Scooby and his friends have never gone away, The Falcon Force doesn't exactly have the same iconic status. However, it seems that the character is being used a way to riff on the current superhero boom so in that way it makes sense.

SCOOB is directed by Tony Cervone and written by Adam Sztykiel, Jack C. Donaldson, Derek Elliott and Matt Lieberman.  It will be released in cinemas in the US and UK on May 15.
