Sony's First Musical 'Vivo' Full Trailer Hits The Right Note

2021 is a big year for musical maestro Lin Manuel Miranda. Not only was his stage musical In The Heights adapted for the big screen but his directorial debut tick tick, Boom! is due later this year. More relevant to this website though, Miranda is heavily involved with two animated features. November will see Walt Disney Animation Studios musical Encanto, with original songs from Miranda. Before that, though is Sony Pictures Animation's Vivo- the first-ever musical from the studio.

Vivo will also feature a selection of new songs from Miranda. This time though, he's also voicing the titular character, a one-of-a-kind kinkajou or rainforest honey bear. The film will follow his journey to deliver a love song to famous singer Marta Sandoval (voiced by Gloria Estefan) on behalf of his beloved owner Andres.

Directed by Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) and written by DeMicco, Quiara Alegria Hudes and Peter Barsocchinn.  Brandon Jeffords is co-director. Joining Miranda and Estefan in the cast is Ynairaly Simo, Zoe Saldana, Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, Michael Rooker, Bryan Tyree Henry and Nicole Byer.

Vivo is the latest Sony Pictures Animation film to scrap a planned cinema release and sell to Netflix, where it will be available on August 6.  It follows similar deals for Wish Dragon and The Mitchells Vs The Machines- the latter of which is reportedly the streamer's most successful animated film to date. Vivo will also be screening in select cinemas in the United States and the United Kingdom from July 30.
