Jorge Gutiérrez's Maya And The Three: The First Trailer Is Finally Here

Fans of 2014's The Book Of Life have been waiting a long time for a follow up from director Jorge Gutiérrez. In the intervening years Gutiérrez has been attached to various projects that never came to fruition, namely a LEGO Movie spin-off and the incredible sounding Untitled Kung Fu Space Western (that we still hope may happen someday). Ultimately he found a home at Netflix Animation and began developing his dream project, the epic event series Maya And The Three.

We've been looking forward to this since it was announced but until now we have had to make do with a handful of images and concept art to keep us going. The series is a Meso-American mythology-inspired fantasy epic featuring a kick-ass warrior princess who must assemble a team of heroes to save her world.

Now, Netflix have finally released the first teaser trailer, and if anything our excitement has gone up a whole other level.

It may be made for the small screen, but it looks the equal of any theatrically released feature of recent years. Its designs have all the hallmarks of Gutiérrez's singular style, and it shares a wonderfully chunky, almost stop-motion look to its CG animation with his first film.

The teaser trailer is full of exciting action, laughs and a cast of colourful, distinctively designed characters. This is almost definitely going to be worth the wait. We are still waiting for a specific release date, unfortunately, with Netflix still being no more specific than this "fall". But we're almost at the end of August already so there's not much longer to wait.

The teaser was accompanied by a full synopsis and a set of new images. Check them all out below.

SYNOPSIS

In a fantastical world, where magic turns the world and four kingdoms rule the lands, a brave and rebellious warrior princess named Maya is about to celebrate her fifteenth birthday and coronation. But everything changes when the gods of the underworld arrive and announce that Maya's life is forfeit to the God of War — a price she must pay for her family's secret past. If Maya refuses, the whole world will suffer the gods’ vengeance. To save her beloved family, her friends, and her own life, Maya embarks on a thrilling quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy that foretells the coming of three great warriors who will help her defeat the gods and save humankind.
