26 Films Qualify To Compete For 2022 Best Animated Feature Oscar

With the year coming to a close it can only mean one thing for the entertainment world- Awards Season is getting underway. The Academy Awards may not be the only game in town, but they are definitely still the best known and highest-profile. Everybody- in the industry or not- knows just what an Oscar is. No wonder that a nomination is still considered a big deal.

The 94th Academy Awards will take place on March 27, 2022- later than usual for a second year, due to allowances for the ongoing challenges of the Pandemic. The nominations will not be announced until February 8, 2022, but the Academy traditionally gradually reveals the longlist for individual categories.

The newest categories to be released are for Animated Feature, Documentary Feature and International Feature Film. This year, a total of 26 features are eligible in the Animated Feature Film category- one less than last year, and down from a record 32 the year before. Members of the Short Films and Animation branch are automatically eligible to vote, and members outside that branch can opt-in provided they meet a minimum viewing requirement. The Academy notes that some of the listed features have yet to have their qualifying release.

The year's list contains two films from Disney, two from DreamWorks Animation and two from Studio 4°C. Sony Pictures Animation has three films eligible this year (due to The Mitchells Vs The Machines' delay from last year). Six anime features have made this year's longlist.

Animated documentary Flee is a rare example of an animated film that could be a contender in multiple categories. Jonas Poher Rasmussen's film has already bagged several awards from festivals around the world. At the Oscars, it is eligible for not only Animated Feature, but also Documentary Feature and International Feature- it has been submitted as Denmark's Offical selection for 2022.  Additionally, it's also eligible for nomination in the Best Picture category- as indeed is every film in the animation category. The full list of features is below.
