Raya and The Last Dragon, Netflix and Arcane Lead 49th Annie Award Nominations

When it comes to Awards season and animation, we are normally talking about one of two dedicated categories in a ceremony dedicated to wider film and/or television. On rare occasion, a particular animation might crash another category (more often than not for music). That's what makes ASIFA-Hollywood's annual Annie Awards so special- every category is celebrating animation.

ASIFA have now announced the full list of nominees for the 49th Annies. The most dominant force this year is again Netflix,  with the streamer involved with an enormous 54 nominations. Disney is in second place with a total of 29 nods for divisions Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Disney Television Animation, Marvel and others. The single most nominated title is Disney's Raya And The Last Dragon with 10 nominations, including Best Feature. Their closest competitor is the other WDAS feature of 2021, Encanto with nine nominations. The most nominated in TV is Netflix and Riot's event series Arcane, which picked up nine and Jorge Guiterrez's Maya And The Three with seven.

Sony Pictures Animation's The Mitchells Vs The Machines also did extremely well, scoring eight nominations including Best Feature, and fellow Sony release Vivo also got multiple nominations. The most successful indie features this year are Flee and Belle, which were both nominated for multiple categories including Best Feature Independent and Best Director.

Juried Awards were also revealed. This year's Winsor McCay Lifetime Achievement awards are going to Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki, computer animation pioneer Lillian Schwartz and legendary Disney animator Ruben Aquino. The June Foray Award for significant and benevolent or charitable impact go to Hiroshima Animation Festival founders Renzo and Sayoko Kinoshita. The Ub Iwerks Award for technical achievement goes to Python Foundation. The Special Achievement Award goes to Glen Vilppu and the Certificate Of Merit goes to Evan Vernon.

The 2022 Annie Awards are currently scheduled to take place as normal as an in-person event on Saturday, February 26, at UCLA’s Royce Hall (although of course in these times, nothing is certain).
