Annecy Announces 2022 Festival Short Film Selection
The Annecy International Animation Festival is one of the biggest celebrations of animation in the world. While traditionally people travel from around the world to the picturesque French city to attend, 2020's festival was cancelled and replaced by an online festival that was accessible anywhere in the world. With most still unable to travel 2021 saw a hybrid event, with both online events and a limited in-person portion for local attendees. As things stand, the festival is currently planning to return to its traditional on-site format for the 2022 edition, which is set to take place from June 13-18.
The line-up is to be revealed gradually over the coming weeks. It's already been announced that the festival's opening film will be Illumination's Minion 2: Rise Of Gru. The screening will mark the world premiere of the film (which has been delayed two full years since its originally scheduled date)
The festival has now also revealed its first wave of content with the line-up of short films screening in competition. The films are divided between The Offical Competition, Off-Limits, Perspective and Young Audience Short Films, with prizes set to be awarded in each category.
The selection was chosen from 1,347 films submitted this year, representing 100 countries. This is more than 150 works more than were submitted for the 2021 festival. In an encouraging development, Male and female filmmakers are equally represented. Accreditations are open now.
The next wave will be announced on March 28 and will include TV, Commissioned and Graduate films. The Feature Films and VR selection will be announced at a later date.
