The Super Mario Bros Movie Gets A Final Trailer

March 10
has become known as Mario Day (Mar10, get it?). And just in time for this year's holiday we have a new, final trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie. The trailer was premiered as part of a Nintendo Direct presentation.

The trailer opens with an imprisoned Luigi, following his kidnapping by Bowser. He's held captive alongside various Mushroom Kingdom residents such as the penguin king from the first teaser trailer and a cute but slightly deranged star.

We then cut to Bowser amassing his army consisting of familiar baddies Koopas, Goombas and "Whatever those things are" and threatening to destroy The Mushroom Kingdom.

We see Princess Peach warning a crowd of her subjects "Bowser is coming". "I'm not afraid.. I'll do anything for my brother" we hear Mario say.

We see a montage of different locations, ending with a sequence that imitates the side scrolling platform gameplay of the original games. Interestingly, in this sequence, we see Mario fighting side by side with Donkey Kong. In the previous trailer, we saw them apparently about to fight each other.

The trailer ends with a sequence that is Mario Kart meets Mad Max. Racing down Rainbow Road, we see the plucky plumber take on Koopa Troopers in a thrilling looking set-piece.

The trailer is full of easter eggs and references for fans, from musical cues and sound effects to cameos and familiar landmarks. It's all got something of an epic sweep and sense of a grand adventure that people perhaps don't really associate with Illumination

The Super Mario Bros Movie is animated by Illumination and co-produced by Nintendo. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go To The Movies) and written by Matthew Fogel (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part). It features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anna Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

The film is produced by Illumination CEO and founder Chris Meledandri and Mario's original creator Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. It will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.

The Super Mario Bros Movie arrives in cinemas and select IMAX locations in the US and UK on April 5.
