On the annual awards circuit, there are awards of many kinds. As well as the more general film and TV awards there are also those that focus on one particular part of the industry. We've already had the
Annie Awards of course, but it has been followed by the
VES Awards.The VES Society's (Visual Effects Society) annual awards are dedicated to celebrating the best in VFX over the past year. The categories include both live-action and animation as well as video games, special-venue projects and commercials.
The 22nd Annual VES Awards took place on February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The big winner for animation was Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, winning four awards. It took home the awards for Outstanding Effects In An Animated Feature, Outstanding Animated Character In An Animated Feature, Outstanding Created Environment In An Animated Feature and Outstanding Effects Simulation In An Animated Feature. Meanwhile, the leading live-action feature was The Creator, which won five awards including Outstanding Effects In A Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Created Environment In A Photoreal Feature. The Last Of Us lead in episodic, picking up four awards.
Other winners included Alan Wake 2 for Outstanding Effects In A Real-time Project, and Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3 won for Outstanding Character In A Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Cinematography In A CG Project.
The VES Society also presented an Award For Creative Excellence to William Shatner, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award to Joyce Cox. Cox is a multi-time VES Award winner and venerated VES Fellow whose credits include Avatar, The Dark Knight, Titanic, The Jungle Book and Men In Black III.
