31 Films Qualify For 2025's Best Animated Feature Oscar
The end of another year means that another Awards Season is fast approaching. The major animated features of the year will compete for the various Best Animated Feature awards. And the most prestigious of them all probably remains the Oscars. It may still be a few months before The Academy announces the latest nominees, but in the meantime, they have released this year's list of qualifying films.
31 films have qualified for nomination, which is down on 33 features in 2023, but above 2022's 27. Not all the films have yet had their Oscar qualifying runs, but are expected to before the qualifying period ends.
Among the list are blockbuster hits and critical darlings Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot, award winner Memoir Of A Snail and Disney's Moana 2. Gints Zilbalodis's Flow is being submitted both for Best Animated Feature and as Latvia's submission for Best International Feature.
The nominees will be ultimately determined by members of The Academy's Animation Branch and members of the wider Academy who opt-in. The winner is then voted on by the Academy as a whole. Who will make the cut this year? We'll just have to wait and see.
We would expect to see Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot nominated, as the biggest animated films of the year so far. And although we haven't seen Moana 2, we'd predict that it would also be nominated- unless it really drops the ball. For the traditional indie slots in the category, Adam Elliot's Memoir Of A Snail feels like a likely pick, as does Flow- both have picked up a pile of awards at various festivals. But we wouldn't count out Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl- because, well it's Wallace and Gromit (and they have form at The Oscars).
The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
