2025 Oscar Nominations Revealed

With the devastating wildfires in Southern California, questions have been asked about whether the Oscars should go ahead as normal. But The Academy has decided that the show must go on. And so the nominations for this year's awards have now been announced.

The nominees for this year's Best Animated Feature Oscar are broadly in line with what we have been seeing elsewhere this Awards Season. The nominees are Flow by Gints Zilbalodis, Inside Out 2 from Kelsey Mann, Memoir of A Snail by Adam Elliot, The Wild Robot from Chris Sanders and Wallace and Gromit: Vengance Most Fowl from Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham.

Flow marks the first nomination for Zilbalodis, although his previous film Away, won several festival awards. Inside Out 2 is a first nomination for Mann, but the original Inside Out won the award in 2015. Elliot has not previously been nominated for Best Animated Feature, but won a Best Animated Short for his film Harvie Krumpet. Chris Sanders was previously nominated in the category for Lilo and Stitch, The Kroods and How To Train Your Dragon. Wallace and Gromit meanwhile have several Oscars to their name, for a Feature award for Curse Of The Were Rabbit plus two wins in the short category for The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave. Additionally, Park has one another Oscar for Creature Comforts and another two nominations.

Will Wallace and Gromit add another award to their haul? Or will wunderkid Zilbalodis match his win at the Golden Globes? Maybe Memoir Of A Snail can follow its win of the top prize at The BFI London Film Festival with a win at the Oscars? Or will the Academy go for a more mainstream, safe pick and plump for the latest from Pixar or Dreamworks?

The nominees for Best Animated Short Film are: Beautiful Men, from Nicolas Keppens and Brecht Van Elslande;  In The Shadow Of The Cypress from Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi, Magic Candies from Daisuke Nishio and Takashi Washio , Wander To Wonder from Nina Gantz and Stienette Boskloppe and Yuck! from Loïc Espuche and Juliette Marquet.

In the Best Visual Effects category the nominees are Alien: Romulus,  Better Man, Dune Part Two, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes and Wicked.

But that's not all, as two of the features nominated for Animated Feature have also been honoured in other categories. Flow has been nominated for International Feature Film, representing Latvia. It is only the second animated film ever to be recognised in the category, following on from Ari Folman's Waltz With Bashir, all the way back in 2008.  Meanwhile, in Music (Original Score), Kris Bowers is nominated for The Wild Robot.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, on Sunday, March 2, 2025. For a full list of nominations see here.
