BAFTA and VES Awards Announce Nominees

The Entertainment Awards Season keeps on rolling, and another couple of major Awards Organizations have announced their nominees for this year. First up, it's the British Academy's turn, as the BAFTA Film Awards Nominations have been announced.

There are four nominations for the Best Animated Film BAFTA for 2025. Nominated are the Golden Globe winner Flow, from Gints Zilbalodis, The Wild Robot from Chris Sanders, Inside Out 2 from Kelsey Mann and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl from Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham.

Will Flow repeat its Globe victory? Or will Pixar add to its many wins in the category? Or will the Academy's long-standing love for Aardman see another gong for Wallace and Gromit?

In the Best British Short Film the nominees are Adios from Jose Prats,  Mog's Christmas from Robin Shaw (based on the beloved Judith Kerr book), and Wander to Wonder from Nina Gantz.

This year there is also a new category for Children's and Family Film. In the inaugural edition, all the nominated films are animated. Flow picks up a second nomination here, as do Vengeance Most Fowl and The Wild Robot. Also nominated is Michael Morpurgo adaptation Kensuke's Kingdom. The Wild Robot picked up a third nomination for Best Score. Wallace and Gromit also picked up a third, in the Outstanding British Film category. It's a banner year for animation at the BAFTAs!

The Special Visual Effects nominees are Better Man, Dune Part Two, Gladiator II, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes and Wicked.

Meanwhile, across the pond, the Visual Effects Society revealed the nominations for the annual VES Awards. The awards annually  “recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in features animation, television, commercials, games and new media.”

The Wild Robot was the top animated contender, with the DreamWorks Animation film picking up five nominations. Other animated films with multiple nominations include Moana 2 and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

The top film contender was Dune Part Two with seven nominations. In the episodic field it was a draw between Shogun and The Penguin, with four nominations each.

“The artistry, ingenuity and passion of visual effects practitioners around the world have come together to create remarkable imagery,” Kim Davidson, VES Chair said. “We are seeing best in class work that elevates the art of storytelling and exemplifies the spirit of innovation. The VES Awards is the only venue that showcases and honours these outstanding artists across a wide range of disciplines, and we are extremely proud of our nominees.”
