4K Restoration Of Princess Mononoke Screening in IMAX
GKIDS Films have ensured that there have been plenty of opportunities to catch the work of Studio Ghibli on the big screen in America. As the custodians of the Ghibli collection in North America, they have for many years, rereleased their most beloved films. Now, in the year of the Studio's 40th Anniversary, they are bringing one of Hayao Miyazaki's most popular films in a way you've never seen before.
GKIDS will bring Princess Mononoke in a brand new 4K Restoration only in IMAX on March 26. The film will screen both in original Japanese language and with English dub. The latter features the voices of Gillian Anderson, Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, Minnie Driver and Billy Bob Thornton.
Miyazaki's 1997 classic is set in an ancient Japan, where humanity clashes with the old forest Gods. Cursed by one of the Gods that had become a demon. the young warrior Ashitaka heads west in search of a cure. Instead, he stumbles into a bitter feud between Lady Eboshi, the leader of Iron Town, and San aka Princess Mononoke, a young human girl raised by wolves, who will stop at nothing to stop the humans destroying her home and the forest spirits and animal Gods who live there.
Princess Mononoke is written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and produced by Toshio Suzuki, with a phenomenal score by Joe Hisaishi. The English screenplay was written by now disgraced author Neil Gaiman.
This is the second Studio Ghibli film to be screened in IMAX (after The Boy and The Heron), but we'd wager it won't be the last. The new 4K Restoration presumably points to an upcoming 4K UHD Blu-Ray release in the near future. Hopefully, the rest of the Ghibli catalogue will get the same treatment.
Hopefully, this will be the first of many events to celebrate Ghibli's anniversary year... but we'll just have to wait and see!
