Doctor Who Preschool Spin-Off In Development
Doctor Who is the longest running sci-fi series in the world. With more than 60 years of time and space spanning adventures, the iconic series has entertained millions of viewers the world over. For the first time since its successful revival 20 years ago, the future of the series is in doubt, with no new series confirmed and the production deal between the BBC and Disney widely expected to be coming to an end. Nonetheless, the BBC is continuing to push the franchise in other areas. It has been announced that the corporation has greenlit an animated spin-off for preschool audiences for their younger children-focused channel CBeebies.
The Beeb is looking for production partners to work on the new series. Disney will not be involved. The show will focus on the Doctor's adventures as they solve mysteries and problems for a younger audience. Patricia Hidalgo, Director of Children's and Education at the BBC said:" Everyone is welcome at CBeebies, including the Doctor. This much-loved franchise entertains millions around the world, so it is only right that our younger audience get to experience the wonder and the magic of the Doctor in a brand new format. This is an extremely exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to welcoming companies to pitch for this new project, as we continue our commitment and investment in the UK’s animation industry."
This will not be the first time that the franchise has got animated. There have been several animated mini-series, plus several 'lost' serials of the classic series have been recreated with animated visuals. Most recently, there was an animated segment in one of the episodes of Ncuti Gatwa's second season.
It will however, bring the show to a whole new audience. The main show is aimed at a general family audience, but is probably a bit scary for the under-5s. This could be a perfect way to introduce younger viewers to the Whoniverse.
It's too early to share any more details at this stage. But fans will be left with many questions. Such as; which of the 15 (now possibly 16) incarnations of The Doctor will feature? Or could it feature multiple incarnations? Or even a brand new Doctor? Will the iconic monsters and foes feature? Will any well known companions or other characters appear?
We can expect to be waiting some time to find out, as the BBC is still seeking an animation studio to partner with. If only we had a time machine...
