'The Mitchells Vs The Machines 2' Announced
Back in 2020 animation fans were eagerly anticipating the release of Sony Pictures Animation's The Mitchells Vs The Machines (which briefly had its name changed to Connected). But the Mitchells came up against a foe they couldn't overcome... the pandemic. Following several COVID-related delays, the film was eventually sold to Netflix, where it went on to be a big hit. In the intervening years, Netflix's relationship with Sony has only continued to flourish, with the record-breaking success of K-Pop Demon Hunters. So if anything, it's a surprise that it's taken so long for a sequel to be announced to The Mitchells Vs The Machines.
The sequel will be directed by Guillermo Martinez, head of story on the first Mitchells and J.P. Sans, co-director of The Bad Guys 2. This will be the directorial debut for Martinez. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (co creators of The Great North), known as The Molyneux Sisters, will write the script. Production is expected to begin in early 2026.
The second film will again be distributed via Netflix, although the two companies are planning on creatively collaborating much closer this time around. Netflix only released the first film, but this time they will be able to be involved from the ground up.
In the original film the Mitchell family embark on a cross-country road trip to deliver oldest daughter Katie to university. Unfortunately, their family bonding time happens to coincide with the start of the robot-apocalypse, when a rogue AI named PAL launches a rebellion against humankind. The family finds themselves as the unlikely heroes trying to save humanity. The film won a lot of acclaim for its painterly-style animation, which was an evolution of sorts from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. It went on to win eight Annie Awards, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller are again producing through their company Lord Miller. Kurt Albrecht is producing for Sony Pictures Animation. Mike Rianda, who wrote and directed the original, as well as playing younger brother Aaron, is returning as an executive producer, alongside Lord Miller's Aditya Sood.
No official title has been announced, so we currently have no idea what the plot of the sequel will be. Will it be a rematch with robots- there's certainly been a lot of advances in AI since the first film came out. Or will it be the Mitchells Vs... something else? Aliens? Monsters? Zombies? Or maybe it will just be an entirely new story featuring the Mitchell clan? Whatever it may be, we're excited to see the return of the Mitchells.
