Zootopia 2 Scores a Record Breaking Opening Weekend

Just shy of a decade passed between the release of the original Zootopia (or Zootroplis in some markets) and Zootopia 2 (aka Zootroplis 2). The first film grossed over $1 billion at the box office, so there was a lot of pressure on the sequel to perform well. Especially as Disney has had such mixed fortunes this year, with several high-profile flops. Many of the children who watched the first film are now adults, but would they be keen to return to Zootopia?

Based on the box office results in the first week, that would seem to be an emphatic 'yes'. The film opened to a phenomenal  $559.5 million global take, including $158 million in North America and $401.5 million internationally.

“The incredible response to Zootopia 2 reflects both its worldwide appeal and the remarkable work of our filmmakers and cast,” Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman, Disney Entertainment, said. “It’s a proud moment for Disney Animation and all of us at Disney, not to mention a great way to start the holiday season.”

The sequel has scored the fourth biggest global opening of all time behind only two Avengers movies and Spider-Man: No Way Home. It's also the biggest global opening of 2025, and the biggest worldwide opening for an animated film.

“There’s something about animals that people can read themselves into,” Jared Bush, the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios and the writer and director of Zootopia 2, said. “The real fun thing about Zootopia is that you can identify with an animal. That’s you, that’s your friend, that’s your teacher, that’s a guy you saw at the DMV. There’s something very universal about that.”

The film has also become the highest grossing global launch for any Disney film in history. It's also been performing exceptionally well in China, where it has earned the 6th highest opening of all time,  the largest non-local animated film and the second highest grossing foreign film, behind only Avengers: Endgame.

Zootopia 2 scored an opening 239% ahead of the original film, putting it well on the path to repeating (or exceeding) that $1 billion haul.

The film sees the return of Bunny/Fox team Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, hot on the trail of the first snake seen in Zootopia in one hundred years. It features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan, Idris Elba, Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Macaulay Culkin, Brenda Song, Fortune Feimster, Patrick Warburton and Nate Torrence.

It is directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, written by Bush and produced by Yvett Merino. Zootopia 2/ Zootropolis 2 is in cinemas now.
