Yuri!!! On Ice Gets 10th Anniversary Screenings

Long before Heated Rivalry, there was Yuri On Ice. If boys falling in love on the ice is your thing, then the 2016 anime series is for you. Created by Sayo Yamamoto (Michiko & Hachin, Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine) and produced by MAPPA, the sports/romance anime was something of a phenomenon when it originally aired. Set in the world of competitive ice skating, it made fans of real skaters, as well as those attracted by the romantic sub-plot. Now, Crunchyroll are bringing Yuri On Ice to the big screen as part of their monthly Anime Night screenings in the United States and Canada.

Yuri on Ice follows Yuri Katsuki, Japan's number one figure skater. After suffering a humiliating loss at the Grand Prix Final, Yuri is ready to hang up his skates for good. But just as he's ready to throw in the towel, his idol and five-time world champion Victor Nikiforov offers to coach him. Together, they work to get Yuri back to the top. And along the way, unexpected feelings begin to develop between them.

The series was a big hit, both with fans in Japan and in the West. It went on to win seven awards in the first (publicly voted) Crunchyroll Anime Awards, as well as the Tokyo Anime Award Festival award for Best Animation, Television Category. It's always been a bit of a mystery why the series never received any sort of continuation or a second season. A feature film sequel called Yuri On Ice: Ice Adolence was announced in 2017, but remained in development hell until it was finally officially cancelled in 2024. Will we ever see more Yuri On Ice? It seems like it's one-and-done, but we wouldn't bet against it returning somehow someday.

The Crunchyroll Anime Nights screening will mark the series' 10th anniversary. It will consist of the first five episodes of the series. The event screenings will take place on one night only, Monday, October 19 at 7:00PM local time. Tickets are on sale now. The Crunchyroll Anime Nights program spans over 280 theaters across participating chains in the US and Canada. They include Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, AMC Theatres, Regal, Cinemark Theatres, Harkins Theatres, and Landmark Cinemas across the U.S., and Canada-Cineplex and Landmark of Canada across Canada.

Future month's screenings will include Dive In Wonderland and a sneak peek of anime coming to Crunchyroll.

Yuri On Ice is available to stream now on Crunchyroll and is available to buy on Blu-Ray and DVD.
