Watch The First (Japanese) "When Marnie Was There" Trailer

Only days after we reported on a whole set of beautiful images from Studio Ghibli's forthcoming When Marnie Was There, we get our first look at the film in motion. Unsurprisingly, it looks suitably beautiful for a Ghibli production, with lush backgrounds and attractive character designs. The film itself will be a real test for second time director Hiromasa Yonebayashi. His first feature film Arriety had a screenplay written by one Hayao Miyazaki, but this time the script is co-written by Yonebayashi himself, alongside Miyazaki's Arriety co-writer Keiko Niwa and Masahi Ando, an established animator making his scripting début. Can the director step out from the massive shadow of the master animator himself? It remains to be seen, but Marnie looks at the very least to be a visual treat.

The trailer made it's début on Japanese TV and has since found its way online. There's no dialogue, but it features the English Language theme "Fine On The Outside" by US-based singer/songwriter Priscilla Ahn.

When Marnie Was There will open in Japanese cinemas on July 19th 2014.
