Studio Ghibli's 'When Marnie Was There' Arrives in US Cinemas This May

When Marnie Was There is Studio Ghibli's most recent film-and potentially (*sob*) their last. Released in Japan last Summer, we've previously reported that the ever-reliable GKIDS had acquired the film for North America. Now we've finally got a firm release date too- it's been announced it will be screening in US cinemas from May 22nd. It will initially be opening in New York and LA, with additional dates and locations following in later weeks.

The film, from The Secret World of Arriety director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, is based on the English novel by Joan Robinson. Ghibli's adaptation transports the tale of a friendship between two young girls- Anna and the titular, mysterious Marnie- to a Japanese setting. The film will be screening in both it's original language and dubbed formats.

GKIDS have announced that the English version will feature True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld Geena Davies, John C Reilly and Vanessa Williams among its typically starry voice-cast.

Additional screenings are expected to be announced in the near future. Keep an eye on AFA for updates! When Marnie Was There has also been picked up for Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment. No UK release has been confirmed as of yet.
