'Voltron Legendary Defender' Gets Teaser, June Release Date

Details have gradually been emerging over the past few months of DreamWorks Animation and Netflix's forthcoming Voltron revival. Now, however, thanks to a surprise WonderCon panel we've got a slew of new information including casting and a June release date- and the very first look at footage in the debut teaser.

Voltron : Legendary Defender is a new series based on the 80's giant-robot action show Voltron- which was created by grafting together two entirely unrelated anime series. The new series has signed Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra) as showrunners- a move that has probably reassured fans more than anything else. The pair were apparently big fans of the original series, and are keen to do it justice, while bringing it up to date for modern audiences. Most encouragingly of all though, is that they have resisted the urge to take it dark, instead insisting that the new version retains the original's sense of fun.

The cast will feature Adventure Time's Jeremy Shada, Bex Taylor-Klaus, The Walking Dead's Stephen Yeun, Tyler Labine, Josh Keaton, Kimberly Brooks and Rhys Derby. Derby is the most surprising addition- he's a hilarious stand-up and comic actor from New Zealand best known for appearing in Flight Of The Concords and the excellent vampire mock-doc comedy  What We Do In The Shadows.

The series seems to be featuring a mix of animation styles, with a cel-shaded CG look being used for Voltron itself and other vehicles. The images of the cast that have been released seems to have a more traditionally animated look- although when seen in motion it could be that they too turn out to be cel-shaded.

Either way, we don't have too long to wait and find out. The first season will be available on Netflix everywhere from June 10th 2016. Check out the trailer below.
