'Wander Over Yonder' To End With Second Season

For some time there has been speculation around the fate of Wander Over Yonder. It has now been confirmed, by series creator Craig McCracken himself, that the currently airing second season would, in fact, be it's last. The series currently has seven episodes left to air between now and the summer. After that, unfortunately for fans, Yonder will wander into the sunset for good.

The news came via a March 5th post on Tumblr, when McCracken explains why the show will not be continuing. Although the creators had an outline planned out for season 3, they were told before the second season even aired that they would not be recommissioned. The decision was apparently not motivated by ratings, but came from higher levels at Disney.

McCracken explains "Unfortunately, the higher up bosses of bosses of bosses at Disney decided not to continue with the show. It’s not that they didn't like Wander, they just felt that 2 seasons and 80 cartoons was enough  and they didn't see the need to produce any more." McCracken has also reportedly expressed frustration in the past that he was prevented from making the series more of a serialised narrative by bosses who only wanted standalone episodes.

Fans will be upset for sure- but it has to be said that 80 episodes is a pretty good innings. Many shorter-lived shows would kill for that.

That said, we can't help but wonder what motivated this decision. Considering that Disney XD have already seen their big hit Gravity Falls wrap up, you might think they'd want to hang on to a successful series. Maybe they're clearing the decks for a raft of new shows, with Milo Murphy's Law and Big Hero 6: The Series coming to the network in future.

As for McCracken, he is currently developing a new series. Cartoon Brew notes he is currently under contract with Disney, so the company will get first dibs on his next project.
