The AFA Podcast 95: With Northrop Davis

Please excuse the interruption, but The AFA Podcast has returned with our first episode of 2018! This time we are joined by a very special guest, Author, Academic and screenwriter Northrop Davis.

For our news section, we talked (0:02) about the BAFTA nominations and The Canadian Screen Awards. Then we talked about Kilkenny Animated and the upcoming Festival Animation First in New York, and the return of the Animaniacs (0:18).

Finally, we talk about the Kickstarter for How We Crafted. Then we are joined by Northrop (0:29) for a very interesting discussion about how the rise of streaming TV is shaking up the anime industry.

Northrop Wanted to make the following clarification/correction:

"At around 46 minutes I described how sometimes Crunchyroll (or whoever) sits on a Japanese production committee.  And I want to clarify that in exchange for being able to have a say in the production,  they are likely co-financing it or adding value in some way-- and if so, they would presumably receive a portion of the profits and/or distribution rights, and/or other financial interests in the work.

At about the 1 hour mark I mention the book “TV Outside the Box” (I incorrectly called it “TV Outside the Book”) and wanted to add the author is Neil Landau.
