'The Breadwinner' Wins Big At 2018 Emile Awards

This past weekend saw the second iteration of the European Animation Awards- aka the Emile Awards- take place. The leading lights of European animation descended on the French city of Lille for a weekend-long celebration featuring masterclasses and events, culminating in the awards ceremony itself.

The big winner in the feature film categories in this sophomore year was Nora Twomey and Cartoon Saloon's The Breadwinner. Unlike many awards ceremonies, The Emiles do not have a 'Best Feature' or Best Series category, but instead awards for the different aspects of the production.

The Breadwinner took home all the awards it was in the running for- best direction, best character and background design, best character animation and best storyboarding in the feature categories.  Denis Do's Funan (A co-production between Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Cambodia) won two awards, for best writing and best sound design in a feature production. Another Day Of Life was nominated in five categories but won just one- for best soundtrack.

The other biggest winner of the night, however, could be found in the TV categories. Danish production The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe won for best direction, storyboarding, character and background design and character animation in a TV/broadcast production.
