GKIDS Acquires China's 'White Snake'

GKIDS Films has released animated films from Japan, the US, Ireland, Spain, Brazil, France and other countries. Now the US distributor has picked up their first film from China.

GKIDS announced they had acquired White Snake ahead of its screening in competition at Annecy this week. It stands out in their catalogue as not only is it their first Chinese animated feature, it's also a rare foray into CG.

White Snake is produced by Bejing's Light Chaser Animation in association with Warner Bros. It was directed by Amp Wong and Zhao Ji and was released in China earlier this year.

The story draws on Chinese folklore and centres on a young amnesiac woman named Blanca who tries to uncover her lost identity with the help of snake catcher Xuan. As they begin to discover more, they uncover a supernatural plot.

GKIDS will release the film theatrically in the US this autumn, both in original language and English dubbed versions. We'd venture a guess it will make its stateside bow at this year's Animation Is Film Festival this October and see general release shortly after that.
