China's Top Animated Film 'Ne Zha' Comes To America: Watch The Trailer

Take a look at the global box office chart for 2019 and you'll see some familiar names: Avengers Endgame, Spider-Man, Toy Story 4, The Lion King... But nestled at number 8 is Ne Zha- the biggest animated film of 2019 that you may not have heard of, and the top grossing non-Disney animated film of the year to date.

And you'd be forgiven for it not being on your radar as Ne Zha has only released so far in China. Since its release on July 26, the CGI animated film has gone on to break a number of records. Not only is it China's number one animated film of all time, but it also has the top gross of any animated film in a single market- it has outgrossed Incredibles 2 US take and Spirited Away's Japanese haul. It's also the third highest grossing Chinese film ever, animated or otherwise- currently north of $580 million

The film is based on Chinese mythology and is loosely based on a novel written in the Ming dynasty. It's been picked up for release in the US and Canada by Well Go USA, who will release the film in IMAX on August 29 and in standard cinemas from September 6.

A young boy, Nezha, is birthed from a heavenly pearl by the Primeval Lord of Heaven. Born with unique powers, Nezha finds himself as an outcast who is hated and feared. Destined by prophecy to bring destruction to the world, the young boy must choose between good and evil in order to break the shackles of fate and become the hero.

Nezha is directed by Jiaozi and co-written by Jiaozi and Yunyun Wei. Animation was produced by Chengdu Coco Cartoon Co., Ltd.
