Angel's Egg 4K Restoration Coming To US Cinemas This November

Mamoru Oshii is best known, at least in the west, for directing the two Ghost In The Shell anime features. But he has a storied and varied career, that includes anime of all kinds, as well as work in live-action. He hasn't directed an anime film in quite some time, although he was chief director on the anime series Vladlove. GKIDS Films is looking back much earlier in his career and bringing back one of his earliest films back to the screen for its 40th Anniversary: the legendary Angel's Egg.

The film has taken on a nearly mythical quality with fans as it has never been released in English in its original form. Extracts from it were used in the Australian live-action sci-fi movie In The Aftermath, but that's the best we've got. Until now that is, when the full movie will be released in a brand new 4K Restoration across the US. The restoration has been supervised by Oshii.

Originally released as an OAV (original animation video). It was directed by Oshii at Studio DEEN. Renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D) created the story alongside Oshii. Oshii then wrote the screenplay and Amano handled art direction. The music was composed by Yoshihiro Kanno.

The film depicts a dark world, where a young girl collects water in jars and carries a large and mysterious egg around with her everywhere she goes. One day, an unknown man enters her life and they discuss the world around them.

The 4K restoration received its world premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival. It will receive its New York Premiere at this year's New York Film Festival. NYFF runs from September 26-October 13, and it will screen as part of the festival's Revivals program. It will also screen at this year's Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain. Sitges will run from October 9-19.

GKIDS will release the film widely from November 19. The film will also be available streaming on HBO Max from September 1 as part of the new deal between GKIDS and HBO. A home video release will follow at a later date.
