The Wonderland (Eleven Arts/ Shout Factory)
Coming to Region 1 Blu-Ray and DVD this week from Eleven Arts and Shout Factory is Keiichi Hara's (Miss Hokusai) fantasy The Wonderland, aka Birthday Wonderland. Schoolgirl Akane is reluctantly taken to a parallel world and told she's destined to become the savior of the realm. So far, so familiar but Hara's film puts several original twists on the usual formula to make it feel fresh. The world Akane (and her carefree aunt Chii ) travel to is an imaginative creation, mixing fantasy elements and technology and giving the film its own identity. It also has gorgeous character designs from renowned Russian artist Ilya Kuvshinov who makes his anime debut as both designer and animation director on the film. Check out our full review here.
The Blu-Ray+DVD comes with both dubbed and subtitled versions of the film and a solid selection of extras. There are interviews with the (Japanese) voice cast, and a making-of featurette called Mayu Matsuoka's Amazing Adventure, featuring the Japanise VA for Akane. The highlight though is an English commentary that features Kuvishinov in conversation with Eleven Arts' Chris Platt and Amelie Khuat, in which the artist provides fascinating insights into the film and its production. It's a must-watch for fans of the film and will make you appreciate it even more.
