Netflix News: Blood Of Zeus, Spriggan, Ada Twist and F Is For Family

Netflix have been busy lately in the world of animation. So we thought we'd bring you all the juicy details in one convenient package. No need to thank us. OK, you can thank us a little.

We've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Bill Burr's sweary seventies sitcom F Is For Family has been renewed for a fifth season. The bad news is that it will be its last. The fifth and final season is set to debut in early 2021.

Netflix have released a trailer for upcoming series Blood Of Zeus, a new original American animated series (not anime despite what Netflix insists on telling you) from Powerhouse Animation the studio who brought us Castlevania. Based on ancient Greek mythology, it follows a commoner living on the outskirts who discovers he's really the son of Zeus. Based on this first look, the series- originally announced as Gods & Heroes- looks like it will be full of the dark themes and gory violence of their previous Netflix collaboration. Blood Of Zeus season one will be available from October 27.

Netflix have also announced a new bonafide anime, in manga adaptation Spriggan. The manga by writer Hiroshi Takashige and artist Ryoji Minagawa was previously published in English under the title Striker and was adapted into a 1998 anime feature film. The series follows an organisation of elite special agents (the Spriggans of the title) who attempt to protect artefacts of an ancient civilisation from those who seek to use them to gain ultimate power. And anyone who has read the manga or seen the film knows that this leads to ultra-violent action scenes- so expect this to follow suit. The new anime will reportedly feature a mix of 2D and 3D CGI animation. Hiroshi Kobayashi will direct and the series will be written by Hiroshi Seko at David Production. Spriggan will be available on Netflix in 2021.

Moving away from blood and guts and into something altogether more wholesome, Netflix is collaborating with Doc McStuffins and Vamparina creator Chris Nee on a new preschool series.  Ada Twist, Scientist will star " a young Black scientist who will explore helping people through scientific discovery, collaboration and friendship".  The series is based on a best-selling children's book series by author Andrea Beaty and illustrator David Roberts.  Ada Twist is the first series announced as part of an overall deal Netflix signed with Nee and her production company Laughing Wild. Also on board is Higher Ground Productions,  the company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama.  Kerri Grant will serve as showrunner. The series will debut starting in 2021

Ada Twist, Scientist follows the adventures of eight-year-old Ada Twist, a pint-sized scientist with a giant-sized curiosity, who aspires to discover the truth about absolutely everything. With the help of her two best friends, Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck, Ada unravels and solves mysteries for her friends and family. But solving the mystery is only the beginning, because science isn’t just about learning how and why and what... it’s about putting that knowledge into action to make the world a better place.
