'Raya And The Last Dragon' Full Trailer Released

Following Disney's reshuffling of release dates, the next major animated feature release from them will be Raya And The Last Dragon from Walt Disney Animated Studios. Despite a radically reduced theatrical market, the film is still set for a March 12 debut, both in cinemas and as a premium 'Premiere Access' title on Disney Plus.

Our first look at the film in motion was in the debut teaser, back in October. Now the first full-length trailer has arrived, and given us much more insight into what to expect.

The trailer kicks off with the titular Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) on a search in a beautifully rendered Chinese style village, complete with lanterns and pagodas. Finding an apparently lost infant, Raya is caught out by a "con baby". It seems that this baby might end up being one of the film's break-out stars. After the action-heavy first teaser, this intro shows that Raya And The Last Dragon is going to be full of Disney's usual humour, too.

We then cut to the film's main set-up, with Raya trying to bring the end to the many years of wars between the lands of her world, by forming a team and seeking the legendary Last Dragon. We get our first look at the Dragon here too- and she turns out to be not quite what Raya was expecting. Voiced by Awkwafina, the Dragon (named Sisu) looks like she is going to be the film's equivalent of Maui in Moana or Genie in Aladdin- both comedic foil, but also a real character with relevance to the plot. We discover she also takes on human form for at least part of the film.

This trailer is chock full or beautiful imagery drawn from East Asian influences. We spotted scenes influence by wu-shu kung-fu movies, samurai flicks and period war films. If you love East Asian cinema, you're going to love this. We get a look at some of the film's other characters, too, including a warrior voiced by the wonderful Benedict Wong, and what looks likely to be the film's antagonist (or at least one of them) a bad-ass looking woman.

Raya and The Last Dragon is directed by Don Hall and Carlos Lopez Estrada and co-directed by Paul Briggs, and is written by Adele Lim and Qui Nguyen. It stars Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong, Sandrah Oh and Alan Tudyk.
