When you think of countries that are big producers of animation certain ones are likely to come to mind. Countries like the United States, Japan, France, The UK and Canada. But animation is increasingly being produced all around the world. Among those places where the animation scene is picking up steam is Africa.

Designed to showcase new talent from across the continent is Disney's new anthology Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire. Overseen by Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse director Peter Ramsey,  and produced by Tendayi Nyeke and Seal Team's Anthony Silverston, the project is designed to showcase the best up-and-coming talent from Africa, brought to a global audience.

The films are by Ahmed Teilab (Egypt), Simangaliso “Panda” Sibaya and Malcolm Wope (South Africa), Terence Maluleke and Isaac Mogajane (South Africa), Ng’endo Mukii (Kenya), Shofela Coker (Nigeria), Nthato Mokgata and Terence Neale (South Africa), Pious Nyenyewa and Tafadzwa Hove (Zimbabwe), Tshepo Moche (South Africa), Raymond Malinga (Uganda) and Lesego Vorster (South Africa). The voice cast features an array of African talent including Florence Kasumba, Amir Hedayah, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Pearl Thusi and Kehinde Bankole.

There are 10 shorts from six different countries. South Africa's Triggerfish (who are also involved in  Star Wars Visions Volume 2) are the lead studio on the project. Each episode will run for around 10 minutes.

The sci-fi focussed anthology gives us a look into Africa's future. Inspired by both the continent's rich past and its present, the films offer us "bold visions of advanced technology, aliens, spirits and monsters imagined from uniquely African perspectives."

The first teaser trailer was unveiled at ComicCon Capetown. It showcases a variety of styles, with both 2D animated and CG featured.

Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire will stream on Disney Plus in Summer 2023.
