Peter Sohn To Direct 'Incredibles 3'
Pixar have become known for their sequels. But then when some of these movies make more than a billion dollars worldwide, who can really blame them? One of the studio's most successful franchises is The Incredibles. The first film grossed $630 million at the global box-office, while 2018's Incredibles 2 became one of Pixar's biggest ever hits, taking in over $1.4 billion. A third film was surely an inevitability, and sure enough it was confirmed as in development at last year's D23 Expo.
We now have a first update on the threequel- and it's a surprising one. Original writer-director Brad Bird will not be returning to helm the third film. Stepping into his place will be Peter Sohn, director of Elemental and The Good Dinosaur. Bird remains on board as a screenwriter and producer.
This is quite the vote of confidence in Sohn, who apart from directing his own films is a long-time Pixar collaborator whose credits include Finding Nemo, Up,and Wall-E, as well as The Incredibles and Incredibles 2. This will undoubtedly be his highest profile project yet.
There's been no explanation for why Bird isn't returning to direct. But it seems likely that scheduling conflicts could be the culprit. Bird is directing Ray Gunn for Skydance Animation and 1906 for Disney. However, apparently, Sohn was handpicked by Bird and Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter to be Bird's replacement. Bird has been a mentor figure to Sohn throughout his career, stretching all the way back to The Iron Giant.
The Incredibles franchise follows the Parrs, a family of superheroes living in a world where supers have been banned. Balancing family life with the exploits of a superhero, the movies have captured the public imagination. And the 2004 original predated the current Marvel-led superhero boom
Further details, including plot, casting and release date are to be announced at a later date.
