Kickstart This! Gods TV: Animated Intro First Look
Some of the most exciting animation out there comes not from animated films or television but from video games. Animation plays a major part in games- not just in the games themselves but in cut-scenes and promotional videos. One upcoming indie game with a very cool aesthetic is Melbot's GodsTV.
Hailing from Barcelona, Spain the game is described as a "cartoony kill-fest for consenting adults" that is "a madcap parody of fame and violence." It is "Built as a lightning-fast action drenched in roguelike mechanics to play solo or in co‑opetition(Trolling your buddy)." Melbot says, "GodsTV turns every weapon, power-up and skill into product placement sponsored by the Gods. “Because you’re no longer just a fighter, you’re a star.”"
The game's distinctive visuals are headed up by cult artist Anna Cattish, known for her work with Disney, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. She provides the game's unmistakable character designs and overall aesthetic.
GodsTV is now on Kickstarter, seeking the funding to complete the game. It rocketed past its minimum goal within 24 hours (ish) and is now headed towards stretch goals. Inspired by 90's arcade classics (Smash TV being a touchstone), the game is an irreverent action romp combining retro-style combat with a satire on fame and showbiz.
The game features four playable, unlockable characters (designed by Cattish) to rampage and kill aliens. When you play the game well enough, a God will take an interest in you and offer you a contract. Working for a God offers you enhanced weapons and abilities, as they shower you with offers and deals. The more famous you become, the more powerful you get.
The game also includes a Story Mode, inspired by "the absurd cheesiness of " NBA2k’s or FIFA’s Story Modes. Filled with bizarre NPCs and comedic plots, each contender will embark on a downward spiral to fame. Find friends and enemies... and even maybe romance.
The developers list their influences as Smash TV, Hades. Hotline Miami, Futurama, Adult Swim, Gorillaz and Rick and Morty with the mood described as "Cartoon Punk".
The game will be available on Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. A demo is available to play on Steam now.
Rewards include physical copies of the game on console, digital artbooks, posters featuring original artwork by Anna Cattish, T-shirts, a body pillow case, a jock-strap (!) and skins. Additional awards allow you to have your name, handle or headline featured in the game itself.
