Spider-Punk Spin-Off In Early Development
A sure indicator of the popularity of a film franchise is the existence of sequels. The most popular of all receive spin-offs as well. The Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse franchise has proven popular enough to receive two sequels (the second of which is due in 2027), as well as talk of a Spider-Gwen led all-female spin-off. There is also a live-action Spider-Man Noir series in the works with Nic Cage. Now, the Spider-verse is set to become even bigger with the announcement of a Spider-Punk spin-off in development.
Introduced in the second movie Across The Spider-verse, Spider-Punk aka Hobie Brown was a break-out character in the sequel. A cockney-accented punk-rock version of Spider-Man, he became an unlikely ally to Miles Morales as he navigated the Spider Society. He is expected to return first in Beyond The Spider-verse, the second sequel produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal, who will also produce the Spider-Punk spin-off.
The movie is set to be written and developed by Daniel Kaluuya, original voice actor of Hobie, and Ajon Singh. The film is said to be in early development, so is likely to be some way off.
It's not clear exactly how long we'll be waiting, but Beyond The Spider-Verse is not releasing until summer 2027, so it's likely to be some time after that.
The original Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was released in 2018, when it was both critically and commercially successful, winning plaudits for its groundbreaking animation and complex plotting. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature among numerous other awards. 2023's sequel Across The Spider-Verse, was even bigger, taking in $690 million at the global box office (compared to the first film's $384 million) and was also Oscar-nominated.
The franchise is known for its experimental animation styles, and in Across The Spider-Verse, the character of Spider-Punk has a distinctive animation style all of his own. What will his film look like? Will it follow the style seen in Across The Spider-Verse or something new? We can't wait to find out!
