Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal Is Resurrected This January

Spoiler Warning
This post contains spoilers for Primal Seasons 1 & 2

There are few animators who are just as comfortable in the world of children's animation as they are in adult animation. But then there aren't many animators like Genddy Tartakovsky. Fresh from his first adult animated feature Fixed, Tartakovsky is returning to what might be his most successful adult animated series so far. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal returns for a third season on Adult Swim on January 11, streaming next day on HBO Max.

Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, the series has won five Emmys, and follows the often brutal adventures of a prehistoric man at the dawn of evolution.

Combining artistry with pulse-pounding action, the first two seasons followed caveman Spear as he forged an unlikely bond with an almost-extinct dinosaur. Eventually, he makes the ultimate sacrifice as a final stand-off turned deadly. The third season opens with a shocking twist as Spear is resurrected in a new form, stripped of his memories and humanity. He is forced to roam a brutal, untamed world as a shadow of his former self. As Spear battles savage landscapes and fearsome foes, faint echoes of his past begin to stir, leading him towards an emotional and explosive reunion that will test the limits of survival.

Tartakovsky said: “After two seasons, I was ready to move on until an idea surfaced that was pulpier, bad-ass, and undeniable. Everyone agreed and Season Three was born.”

“I mean, not everyone can kill off their main character and then go ‘on second thought…’ and pull it off!” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim. “But Genndy tends to not make things easy for himself, and what we get as a result is a season three that is more bonkers than the decision to kill Spear off in the first place! You thought there was emotion to the main character dying in season two, wait till you see what’s in store for season three.”

Primal is created by and directed by Tartakovsky, with Art Direction by Scott Wills (Samurai Jack),  music by Tyler Bates (Guardians Of The Galaxy) and Joanne Higginbottom (Samurai Jack) and sound effects design by Joel Valentine (Unicorn Warriors Eternal).

A first look teaser of the new season was unveiled at this year's New York ComicCon.
