Golden Globe Nominees Revealed
As a new year approaches, we enter another awards season. And first out of the gate, as per usual, is The Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's awards have been somewhat controversial over recent years, but they have done some work to restore their reputation. The ceremony only has one animation category- Best Motion Picture Animated- but this year a couple of animated films are represented in multiple categories.
The year's animated phenomenon K-Pop Demon Hunters scored an expected nomination in Motion Picture Animated. And it's also not a massive surprise to see the film represented in Best Original Song for Golden. Its third nomination is a bit more unexpected. The HFPA has recently added a new category Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement, to reward more mainstream fare. K-Pop Demon Hunters is nominated here, despite only having been in cinemas for two weekends. Zootopia 2 also scored a nod for Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement, perhaps unsurprisingly given its record-breaking haul. It was also, of course, nominated for Best Picture Animated.
The remaining nominees for Best Picture Animated are perhaps the most varied and unconventional we've seen in the category yet. The HFPA has had a tendency to vote for the more mainstream animated features, with a token indie here and there. This year it's
Also nominated is French time-bending adventure Arco, anime TV series spin-off Demon Slayer Kimestu No Yaiba: Infinity Castle, Pixar's Elio and French drama Little Amélie or the Character of Rain.
It's definitely an interesting list. K-Pop Demon Hunters and Zootopia 2 are expected nominees and might be considered the front-runners to win. Elio wasn't a given in the same way most Pixar flicks are- given its box-office performance and mixed critical reception. It's rare to see anime nominated outside of Studio Ghibli and Mamoru Hosoda, so Demon Slayer's nomination is a genuine surprise. The French duo of Arco and Little Amélie have been performing well on the awards and festival circuit, so it's natural to see them here.
As for who will win? It's hard to say. There doesn't seem to be one stand-out film that's far ahead of the pack, like with this year's Flow. If it was judged on cultural impact, then K-Pop Demon Hunters would have it sewn up. Little Amélie has been picking up a lot of awards, so perhaps it could lead it to Golden Globes Glory. Then again Zootopia 2 is a crowd-pleaser and the HFPA does like a bit of Disney. Or could Elio redeem itself with awards success? Arco and Demon Slayer may be regarded as more outside bets but don't count them out.
We haven't got to wait too long to find out; the ceremony will take place on Sunday, January 11. It will be broadcast in the US on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
