New 'Darkwing Duck' Series Ordered To Series

Let's get dangerous... again. Children of the 90s may well remember Darkwing Duck, originally part of the iconic Disney Afternoons block. The adventures of the superhero mallard originally aired from 19991-1992 but were subsequently repeated for many years afterwards. It has now been confirmed that a new version of Darkwing Duck has been greenlit, and a whole series order has been made. The series will stream on Disney+ and is being produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Point Grey Pictures. The news was originally reported on way back in 2020, but it had been all quiet ever since. Until now.

In the years since, Rogen and Point Grey have been involved in the successful rebooting of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Mutant Mayhem, so perhaps people will have more faith in them to do this right. Before that, their reputation for rude and crude comedy made them seem like a curious fit for a Disney series.

Original Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones was a consultant on the project, and seems to have given his approval. Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui are writers and executive producers on the new show, effectively making them showrunners. The series is produced by Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham for Point Grey.

“Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” Stones said. “The new creative team has certainly amped up the action and comedy without forgetting the Disney heart. This series places DW in the literary tradition of Robin Hood, Zorro, and Sherlock Holmes, heroes whose lore has been reinterpreted by multiple creators in multiple mediums. They explored the core of those characters by tossing them into new eras, new relationships, and even new universes. No matter when or where, Darkwing Duck will appear in a cloud of blue smoke to grab the spotlight.”

The series seems to follow on from the original, meaning it's technically a sequel rather than a reboot. According to the official synopsis, “For the last 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits. Now a rebellious teen named Duckie who knows all about his heroic past shows up to pull this ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. Together, this unlikely duo will get dangerous to fight old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the entire universe.”

This follows the successful rebooting of DuckTales, which did feature an appearance from DW. However, this new series doesn't seem to have any connection to the new DuckTales, beyond the fact that they both have Launchpad McQuack in them.

Much like DuckTales 2017, the new series has quite a star-filled voice cast. Mark Hamill will star as Drake Mallard, aka Darkwing Duck. Seth Rogen is playing Launchpad. Lizzy Caplan will voice Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar is Duckie. Dan Stevens is Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis appears as Rosa, Kathryn Newton is Firecracker, Teo Briones is Timb, Tyler Dean Flores is Pondsy, Katie Rich is Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon is Officer Webb.

No release date or window has been released just yet. In the meantime, the original Darkwing Duck, as well as both the original and rebooted DuckTales, are available to stream on Disney+.
