Game Over: EA Shutters BioWare, Cancels New Mass Effect

As video games have become ever more sophisticated, they have often become more of a storytelling-based medium. Interactivity is what makes it a game, but many of the best games today are praised for their narrative as well as their gameplay. One of the developers who are most acclaimed for their storytelling is BioWare. In a big shock for gamers, owners Electronic Arts have announced the studio is closing its doors for good.

BioWare was established back in 1995 in Alberta, Canada. They were famous for specialising in Role Playing Games (RPGs) with a strong storytelling element. Games they published included iconic RPG Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, MDK2, Jade Empire, Anthem and even a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG for the Nintendo DS. But they are best known for two series that started in the 2000s: sci-fi epic Mass Effect and fantasy Dragon Age. Both franchises have spanned multiple games, and have unfolded stories across multiple titles. Most recently, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released in 2024. A new Mass Effect game was in development at the studio, but EA have cancelled it as they shut the studio. A Mass Effect TV series is still in development at Amazon Prime.

The company grew from humble beginnings and achieved worldwide success. They expanded from their original Alberta offices and at various times opened additional campuses in Montreal, Quebec; Austin, Texas; Sacramento, California; San Francisco, California and Galway, Ireland. They were acquired by EA in 2007, which was at the time the biggest multi-platform publisher in the world.

Although they operated under EA quite happily for years, more recently the relationship has been more fractious. Following the relative failure of Veilguard, in January 2025 EA set about restructuring and downsizing BioWare, cutting roughly half the studio's staff,

So the studio was but a shadow of its former self by the time of this week's announced closure. The cuts come as part of 400 staff losing their jobs across the whole of EA. This comes in the wake of the $55 billion buyout of the company by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners. EA has been cancelling projects, downsizing teams and making cuts all over, and has plans to heavily invest in AI. None of which sounds like good news, neither for gamers nor for the health of the industry. And it sounds depressingly familiar to what's happening all across the entertainment industry.

After the news broke, BioWare released the following statement:

For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio. It has been a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought our worlds to life.

Baldur's Gate. Neverwinter Nights. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Dragon Age. Mass Effect. Anthem.

Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.

There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition.

What generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember. These games became so much more because you played them, debated your choices, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds your own.

From all of us at BioWare, thank you for being the most meaningful part of our story.
