Ava DuVernay Developing 'Wings Of Fire' Animated Series

Acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma, Queen Sugar, 13th) has signed on for her first animated project. DuVernay has signed on to develop an animated series based on the fantasy book series Wings Of Fire for Warner Bros Animation. Although no ultimate destination for the series has been confirmed, it seems likely it will land at HBO Max, the upcoming Warner Media streaming service.

Although DuVernay built her career on serious issues-led drama and documentary, she has also got form in fantasy, adapting YA fantasy classic A Wrinkle In Time for Disney, and currently working on The New Gods for DC.

The Wings Of Fire series is created by Tui T Sutherland and spans 15 novels, three graphic novels and four short stories so far. The publishers describe the story:

A war has been raging between the dragon tribes of Pyrrhia for years. According to a prophecy, five dragonets will end the bloodshed and choose a new queen. But not every dragonet wants a destiny. And when Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny discover the truth about their unusual, secret upbringing, they might choose freedom over fate -- and find a way to save their world in their own way.

The novels in the series are told from the perspective of multiple dragons from different tribes, so the series may follow suit. It's set in a world entirely ruled by dragons, so fantasy fans should lap this up. Warners describe it as a "high-end serialized animated family television series."

DuVernay is on board as executive producer, alongside creator Sutherland, Dan Milano, Crista Starr and Sam Register. The series is being produced by WBA in association with DuVernay's own production outfit ARRAY.  Wings Of Fire is the first announced project to come out of an overall production deal DuVernay has with Warner Bros. TV.

There are no other details just yet, such as when we might expect it, or any other talent attached. So we'd say it is fair to assume its still some way off.  But you can be sure that we'll be keeping an eye on this one, so stay tuned!
