Newsburst: Rick and Morty S4, Tokyo Godfathers, DuckTales and More

Welcome back to our new news round-up feature, Newsburst. This time- release dates for Rick and Morty new episodes and Tokyo Godfathers on Blu-Ray, the DuckTales game that never was and more news from around the animation world!

Just days after releasing their samurai short, Adult Swim have officially confirmed the return date for the second half of season 4 of Rick and Morty. The second batch of five episodes will air in the US starting May 3.  In a typically Adult Swim sort of move they dropped the news- and a new trailer- on April Fool's day, alongside a number of other shows' return dates. The Shivering Truth returns May 10, Robot Chicken is back this summer, and Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal returns in the autumn.

GKIDS Films and Shout Factory have announced the home release of the remastered version of Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers for this summer. The film will be available on digital from May 19 before making its US Blu-Ray debut on June 2. The film has been completely restored and remastered from a 4K transfer and features a brand new English dub produced by NYAV Post. The Blu-Ray and DVD combo-pack will feature a selection of special features, including a Satoshi Kon short film that has never been released on disc outside Japan. Pre-order the film from ShoutFactory.com and receive a limited edition 18” x 24” lithograph of the cover art, while stocks last.

Games studio FDG Entertainment pitched Disney a new platform game based on the new DuckTales called Quackshot, but unfortunately, they never got the licence. They released a set of screenshots as a (cruel) April Fools joke. Hopefully, the positive reaction it got-including from DuckTales creative staff members- will make Disney reconsider (pleeeease?).

Illumination's prequel-sequel Minions 2: The Rise Of Gru has been pushed back to July 2, 2021. Sing 2 has been moved to November of 2021.

Anime auteur Masaaki Yuasa has announced that he has stepped down as president of the studio he co-founded, Science Saru. The man has been incredibly prolific these past few years, including releasing two features in one year, so he deserves a break. However, he still has several projects in the works, including Japan Sinks for Netflix, and musical feature Inu-Oh, so we definitely haven't seen the last of him.
